After searching for a new mattress for a few weeks, my wife mentioned that I might be interested in the Pod. At first, I wasn’t sure if it would be worth it for us. While I’m a notoriously hot sleeper (frequently wake up from night sweats, tossing and turning, and throwing the blankets off), it sounded like a lot of money for a mattress. I started doing a bit of research on the options available for hot sleepers. It really did seem like the Pod was the only mattress offering a solution. After a few more days, we decided to invest in a Pod. As I placed the order, I started to envision not waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat, and my wife being able to sleep through the night without my constant jostling. It sounded too good to be true!
Our Pod arrived within the week and I was eager to set it up since per usual, I hadn’t been sleeping too well. It came in three boxes: 1 for the foam mattress, 1 for the Hub (the part that heats and cools the water), and 1 for the tech cover that zips onto the mattress. The instructions tell you to download the Eight Sleep app that pairs with the Pod, and from there, set up was a breeze. We set up the Pod together, and it was very easy to navigate (especially considering that reading instruction manuals is not typically my forté).
Once the Pod was set up on our bed frame, the app prompted us to answer a quiz for personalizing our temperatures. Just by answering a few questions, we found what the best temperatures would be for our first night. My wife and I settled into our first night of sleep. She set the bed to warm on her side, and I excitedly set it for very cold. We drifted off to sleep, and for the first time in a while, I didn’t wake up in the middle of the night. No night sweats, no wet sheets. It was a game-changer!
What makes the Pod’s temperature even easier to use is the feature called SmartTemp. It’s our favorite feature! If you activate Smart Temp within the app, the bed automatically adjusts to give you the deepest sleep possible each night. It learns your sleeping patterns, and automatically changes the bed temperature throughout the night for each sleeper. My wife likes to fall asleep very warm, then drift into deep sleep with a bit colder temp, then wake up warm (in other words, her smart temp profile is 4 | -2 | 2). I, on the other hand, prefer variations of cold each night (-4 | -6 | -4).
The Pod tracks your sleep and gives you a sleep fitness score each night based data collected from the sensors in the tech layer. After a few nights on the Pod, we started to improve our sleep scores and get insights into how to improve our sleep habits. For example, I realized that I was taking too long to get out of bed in the morning (45 mins of scrolling through Twitter and reading the news was not doing me any favors) and my wife realized that she needs to get ~1 hour more of sleep per night to be in the optimal range of time slept (7-9 hours per night).
It took us a little while to get used to the temperature changes and tracking (I had previously used a Whoop, but my wife had never used a sleep tracker before), but after 2 weeks, we really started to love the Pod and get the hang of how to use the data to improve our sleep habits. Then, 3 weeks into sleeping on the bed, we took a weekend trip to the beach. That’s when we really started missing having different temperatures on each side of the bed (blanket wars, anyone?). I guess they say absence makes the heart grow fonder!
We noticed in just 30 days that both my wife and I have been sleeping deeper (we can tell from the Sleep Stages feature in the app), tossing and turning less, and to the great pleasure of my wife, my night sweats are gone.
After sleeping on the Pod, I don’t think we’ll ever go back to basic mattresses. It’s been worth every penny.
