The Reality of Your Sleep Habits

Most adults already do not receive enough sleep. It is recommended that adults have between 7 and 8 hours of sleep, but according to the Center for Disease Control, the average is about 6 hours. These sleep problems can be amplified when you have a baby in the household. Not only are you getting adjusted to a new routine and sleeping around your child’s schedule, but you likely stay up even after your little one is asleep to catch up on household work or other things. Maybe you have worries about how your baby is doing and keep getting up to check on him or her. Babies can make the strongest people paranoid about the littlest things.

Moms often feel as though they must take on the majority of the work when it comes to taking care of babies. Even if you have a good support system, you may feel guilty about spending time away from the baby. Let other people help out at times so you can rest. Grandma can handle a feeding session every once in awhile, and you can call up your experienced mom friends to come by and spend some time with baby while you take a nap.

It is not always possible to have help from family or friends. Whether you are a single parent or not, there are sure to be moments in which you are exhausted and frustrated. Make it a point to take care of yourself, because if mommy is not well rested and feeling her best, it will be more difficult to properly care for a newborn.

Tips to Sleep Better

One thing that is crucial for you to do, is make sure that you grab any bit of sleep that you can. Babies that are breastfed especially will need more care from mommy specifically, so you may only be able to get an hour or two of sleep at a time. When this is the case, be sure to sleep when your child is sleeping. The dishes and vacuuming can wait until later, I promise. First time moms seem to have this idea that it is necessary to keep the home perfectly picked up and clean, along with caring for the baby. The truth is that you will have to get used to a less-than-ideal level of cleanliness in the home, now that you have a child who will soon be making messes throughout the day.

Start Early

Sleep deprivation is a very real issue. You should talk to your partner or support system about this before you have the baby. It is difficult to know how things will be before the fact, when you may be experiencing some insomnia as part of your pregnancy woes. However, it is one of the most important things that you can do for yourself and your child.

You should not hesitate to use the nursery at the hospital if you want to get rest before the inevitable craziness when you go home. The staff will assist you with caring for your baby as you get much needed sleep. You do not have to feel guilty and that you are being a neglectful mother if you do not have your child in the room with you every minute. Even just a few extra hours of sleep will make a world of difference.
